NPP agrees to give Bawumia more time to choose running mate

  The governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) has granted its flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia more time to consult and choose a running mate for the 2024 election. This was announced by the General Secretary of the party, Justin Frimpong Kodua, at a press conference in Accra. Dr Bawumia had a deadline to submit his choice of a running mate to the governing party's highest decision-making body today – December 6. However, in the last hour, the party confirmed the NPP flagbearer was unable to meet that constitutionally imposed deadline. An emergency meeting of the National Executive Committee and the National Council took place today to consider whether or not to give the Vice President more time. In the end, the decision was emphatic, with consultation still not complete, and lobbying still in full swing, the Vice President has been given more time to ponder over his choice and submit his decision.   Parliament is expected to pass the 2024 Budget today, as confirmed by the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, on November 30. He reiterated his earlier position that the 2024 budget statement and economic policy had not been approved. During the preceding day’s approval session, the Majority staged a walkout, alleging that the Speaker conducted himself in an unfortunate and improper manner. They contended that, after a voice vote on the floor, the Speaker initially ruled in favor of the Majority but reversed his decision when the Minority challenged the vote and called for a headcount. The Majority accused the Speaker of employing delay tactics to allow absent Minority members to rush in for the headcount after their names were mentioned.   Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has congratulated elected parliamentary candidates of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) across the country and urged them to adopt humility and grace to also win the 2024 polls. Delegates of the NPP across the country went to the polls on Saturday, December 2, 2023, to vote for their parliamentary candidates in orphan constituencies. The elections were supervised by the Electoral Commission (EC). Nii Noi Nortey and Jefferson Sackey won the primaries in the Klottey Korle and the Ablekuma Central Constituencies respectively; former Commissioner of the Customs Division at the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) Colonel Kwadwo Damoah won in the Jaman South Constituency.
