Gyakye Quayson is facing charges of forgery and perjury concerning certain alleged offences in the run-up to the 2020 Assin North parliamentary election. Quayson is facing five charges, including forgery of passport or travel certificate, knowingly making a false statutory declaration, perjury, and false declaration for office If found guilty, he could face up to 10 years in prison However, Mubarak is confident that Quayson and the NDC will not be deterred by the prospect of prison, and will still win the election. “I have told him, ‘Chief, you may end up in prison but you’ll keep the seat.’ Kwame

A group of Civil Society Organizations in the energy sector have called on the government to publish the names of third-party dealers involved in the ‘Gold for Oil’ programme. The call comes after some oil marketing companies (OMCs) withdrew from the programme due to unresolved concerns.  The Ghana Chamber of Bulk Oil Distributors has also expressed concerns about the implementation of the programme. Energy analyst and co-chair of the Ghana Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (GHEITI), Dr. Steve Manteaw, said the government must publish the names of all intermediary dealers in the programme to promote transparency.  Speaking on Joy Business, he added that the current mode of the programme creates room for some operators to take advantage of the system. “There is no disclosure in terms of who is financing the domestic gold purchasing in this transaction. The by-election is being held following the Supreme Court's ruling that ousted former MP James Gyakye Quayson as an elected member of parliament. The Court held that Quayson's election was null and void because at the time he filed to contest, he owed allegiance to another country contrary to Ghanaian laws. In a press statement, the EC indicated that nomination forms will be available for download on its website from Thursday, June 1. The EC advised interested persons to pick the forms when available. The by-election is expected to be keenly contested between the two main political parties, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP). The NDC is expected to field the incumbent MP, Quayson, while the NPP is yet to announce its candidate. The by-election is seen as a test of strength for the two parties ahead of the 20
