Gyakye Quayson applies to High Court to review daily trial order

James Gyakye Quayson, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate for Assin North, has filed a motion to review the High Court's order that he must appear in court every day for his trial.

The trial is scheduled to begin on Tuesday, June 20, 2023. Mr. Quayson is facing charges of perjury and forgery.

The High Court had earlier ruled that the trial of Mr. Quayson must be heard every day, beginning on Tuesday June 20, 2023.

The court rejected a request by Mr. Quayson’s lawyer to have the trial continue after the Assin North bye-election, which is scheduled for June 27, 2023.

Mr. Quayson was elected to represent the Assin North constituency in the 2020 general election, but was kicked out of Parliament after the Supreme Court directed Parliament to expunge his name from its records

The state has filed criminal charges against Quayson, who is accused of holding dual citizenship.

The leader and flagbearer of the NDC, John Dramani Mahama, has criticized the High Court's decision to hear Quayson's trial every day.
