Cabinet Agrees to the Establishment of U.S Military Base in Ghana
A Memorandum
of Understanding (MoU) on defence cooperation between Ghana and the United
States has been placed before parliament for debate and approval. The document
was signed by cabinet on the 8th of March 2018 and it's yet to be
approved by parliament.
The MoU
between Ghana and United States if approved by parliament would permit the stay
of American Military Forces in the country. Aside attaining permit, the military
would be exempted from paying tax on equipment brought into Ghana; be allowed
to set their own telecommunication system; authorised to control entry to the
facilities meant for exclusive use of their forces; allows U.S. forces and their contractors to undertake construction activities on and make alterations and improvements to agreed facilities and areas amongst others.
Meanwhile
the document has been sent to parliament by the Minister of Defence Mr Dominic Nitiwul
to be debated upon and approved.
