The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has announced that individuals affected by the Akosombo Dam spillage will be able to cast their votes in the 2024 elections even if they have lost their voter ID cards due to the flood. Samuel Tettey, the Deputy Electoral Commission, stated that this measure is being implemented to ensure that flood victims are not deprived of their right to vote.

During a press conference addressing electoral roll matters, Tettey explained, "Regarding other identification details, I cannot provide specific information. However, if you have lost your voter ID card but your name is correctly registered in the voter roll, you will still be eligible to vote without the voter ID card."

He stressed that it is the responsibility of voters to make sure they are at the correct polling station to vote without any issues, saying, "So, whether or not you have the voter ID card, on the day of the election, as long as you know your designated polling station, that's all you need. The challenge arises if you go to the wrong polling station, which would waste everyone's time. But if you go to the correct polling station, your name will be on the voter roll, and you will be permitted to vote."

In the meantime, various organizations have extended support to aid the flood victims. Vodafone Ghana Foundation, among others, conducted visits to affected areas in Mepe (Volta Region) and Asuogyaman (Eastern Region) and provided relief items, including tents, mosquito nets, mattresses, food supplies, and clean water. Additionally, the United States government, through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), has contributed $100,000 (GH¢1.1m) to assist over 31,000 individuals displaced by the recent flooding. This aid will bolster the relief efforts of the Ghanaian government, focusing on saving lives, alleviating suffering, and initiating the recovery process.

The Akosombo Dam spillage began on September 15, 2023, and persisted until October 19, leading to the flooding of numerous homes in the Mepe and Battor areas of the North Tongu District in the Volta Region. The floods have resulted in substantial property damage, including the loss of numerous buildings valued at thousands of Ghana Cedis.
