Gyakye Quayson to be sworn in today

James Gyakye Quayson, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament for Assin North, will be sworn in today, July 4, as the MP-elect for the area.

He was re-elected on June 27, after the Supreme Court on May 17 declared that his previous election was illegal.

However, Quayson is also facing a forgery case at the High Court, and is expected to be there today to begin his daily trial.

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has described the daily trial as unacceptable.

“We just have elected a fresh MP and I have to go and swear him in to start his work. The same thing I complained about is still happening. They are chasing after him, and trying to prosecute him, even though, we know that, what they are talking about, there are even more of us who have the same thing, but they are not being prosecuted,” Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin stated.

James Gyakye Quayson of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) was re-elected as the Member of Parliament for Assin North in a by-election on June 27, 2023. He received 57.56% of the votes cast, or 17,245 votes. Charles Opoku of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) came in second with 42.15% of the votes, and Bernice Enyonam Sefenu of the Liberal Party of Ghana received 0.29% of the votes.
