NPP Set to Hold its Super Delegates Conference Tomorrow to Elect 5 Aspirants

Within the heart of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), a new journey is set to unfold as the ruling party holds its Super Delegates Conference on Saturday, 26
th August 2023, to reduce the 10 presidential aspirants to 5.

The special delegates conference is a buildup to the national conference on November 4, 2023, where the party’s flag bearer for the 2024 general election will be selected.

For the past couple of months, the candidates have been selling their message to party delegates across the length and breadth of the country in an attempt to convince delegates as to why each of them believes they are the ‘perfect’ candidate to lead the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to break the eight-year cycle of governance between the party and the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

As the party faithfuls and the nation at large watch with bated breath, these are the aspirants contesting in the NPP flagbearership race. They are the incumbent Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia; former Trades and Industry Minister, Alan John Kwadwo Kyerematen; the Member of Parliament (MP) for Assin Central, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong; the MP for Essikado-Ketan, Joe Ghartey, who is also a former Minister of Railways Development and Attorney-General and Minister of Justice.

The rest are, Boakye Agyarko a former Minister of Energy, and a former General Secretary of the NPP and Press Secretary to President J.A. Kufuor, Kwabena Agyei Agyepong. a former Minister of Food and Agriculture, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto; a former Commissioner of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), Dr. Kofi Konadu Apraku; a former MP for Mampong in the Ashanti Region, Francis Addai-Nimoh; and an energy expert, Kwadwo Poku.

Beyond the political messages of the aspirants, the 956 delagates would be making a decision based on a number of factors. These include the competence and general appeal of each aspirant, their ethnic and religious background, their ability to win the 2024 general election, and a host of other factors.

Delegates who are expected on Saturday to cast their ballot include members of the National Council, and National and Regional Executive Committees, Members of Parliament and three representatives from each of the special organs of the party (Youth, Women and Nasara).

The other delegates include past national officers, three representatives from every branch, founding members during the registration of the party at the Electoral Commission (EC) and all card-bearing ministers.

According to the Electoral Commission, polls will officially open at 9 a.m. and close at 1 p.m. across all centers.
