#NPPDecides: Polls Officially Open as NPP Delegates Elect a new flagbearer Ahead of December 2024 Polls

Polls have opened in an internal party election to select the new leader and flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) ahead of the 2024 general elections.

A total of 203,439 delegates are expected to cast their ballots in this decisive vote.

Polls officially opened at 8am GMT and are expected to close at 2pm GMT across all voting centres in all the 276 constituencies of the country and the Party Headquarters, at Asylum Down in Accra.

The Greater Accra Region has 39,134 delegates making it the region with the highest number of delegates. This is closely followed by the Ashanti Region with 34,987 delegates, with the Oti Region having the lowest number of 3,490 delegates.

Four candidates are running in the flagbearership race. They are Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Member of Parliament for Assin Central Constituency, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, former Agric Minister, Dr Owusu Akoto Afriyie, and former Member of Parliament for Mampong Constituency, Francis Addai-Nimoh.

However, the competition is keenly contested between Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia  and Kennedy Agyapong, with all opinion polls placing the former in the lead.

Today’s election is follows the Super delegates contest which was earlier held to trim the number of aspirants from 10 to 5. However, the former Trade and Industry Minister, Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen pulled out of the race and resigned from the party in September, after the Special Delegates Conference and declared his intention to contest as an independent candidate citing intimidation of his supporters.

The Electoral Commission (EC) is supervising the conduct of the elections and shall have the full responsibility of ensuring a transparent, free and fair election.

To be declared a winner of the presidential primaries, a candidate must secure more than 50% of the votes.
